While one could use TRIACs to play with the AC power going into the drill, just using a servo to control the throttle is simple and avoids the pesky high voltage. Hand drills are pretty strong, hopefully this instructable will help others integrate it into other projects, We also talk about using home made optical encoders, which can be used for all sorts of robot applications.

Getting a precisely sized, hardened shaft is more important if there are actual loads in the system not here! Don't try to hack saw these babies--you'll just be grinding down the teeth.

Dremel required. If you look at the pic, the drill is off angle from the encoder shaft, but the rubber webbing in the shaft coupler makes this a non-issue.

It also converts between the different shaft sizes. The encoder wheel tells the uController how fast the drill is spinning, which the uController then uses to regulate the speed, deliver the right amount of solder, and control how fast the guide servo sweeps the solder back and forth on the target spool.

The black U-shaped piece is an opto interrupter, which basically has a beam that gets broken by the encoder wheel.

This triggers an interrupt on the roboduino, triggering a function that keeps track of the current speed and number of rotations. We used this online encoder wheel generator to print out home-made optical encoder wheels on a laser printer.

We taped two wheels together with double sided tape to make sure the black parts were opaque enough. When the sensor sees the light, it turns on and shorts the arduino input to ground.

When it's off, the 10k resistor pulls the line high. To hold the drill in place, we just traced an outline and screwed in some chunks of wood around the perimeter. Add some double sided tape to get a snug fit. We use the angle brackets to hold the bearing flange mounts in place. The great thing about these flange mounts is that the bearing can swivel ball joint style inside degrees before you tighten them down. So we get everything roughly in place, make sure the shafts can spin, and then tighten the flange mounts down.

We first tried just wrapping tape around the two shafts to make a couple that matched the ghettoness of the rest of the setup, but that failed horribly after only a few runs. The "spider" coupling from mcmaster provides a backlash free way to connect two different sized shafts that have some angle and axial misalignment. You buy the end pieces and the middle piece separately to fit your shaft sizes Since there are relatively no loads in this system compared to the lb capability of these bearings, the solder spool is only supported by a single bearing.

One thing we were worried about was the Feeder spool continuing to spin after the Target spool stopped. As it happens, there's just enough friction in the bearing to stop the Feeder spool, but not so much that the solder wire breaks.

This drill is a variable speed, so controlling the trigger position allows control over the speed.

We have seen so many geeky stuff through movies a while back and now we can experience them in our real life. Sometimes I wonder how is this going to end. However one of those geeky things I really loved was Hand Gesture controls. I just found two easy to setup software tools to do this. You may have heard of Leap Motion controller for Mac and PC which allows you to control your computer using your two hands without touching anything.

First of all you need to have a webcam on your computer and one of following software and obviously a computer. You need to be in front of your webcam. The webcam grabs your hand movements and send it to the software. The software process the gesture you just played and compare with predefined gestures. Once it found a match it will tell the operating system to do the particular task that relevant to the gesture. So, Here we go…. This is the most powerful Gesture Control software that I found so far.

As I mentioned above this app converts your hand movements in front of the webcam to executable computer commands. But there are few cons too. Flutter can only use with listening music and watching videos.

Visit Flutter Website to download the app to your computer. Once you downloaded and installed play your favorite song using one of previously mentioned player and fire up the Flutter. The 17 muscles originating in the palm of your hand are called "intrinsic," while the remaining 18 "extrinsic" muscles originate in your forearm. These muscles can be further divided into four main groups based on their function: the carpal, intrinsic hand, extrinsic hand and extrinsic thumb muscles.

The carpal muscles originate in the forearm and control your hand's movements at the wrist. The extensor carpi radialis longus and brevis muscles both act to move your hand, at the wrist, toward your thumb and away from your palm.

The extensor carpi ulnaris also moves the hand away from the palm, but moves the hand away from your thumb. The flexor carpi radialis muscle bends your hand toward your palm and toward your thumb, while the flexor carpi ulnaris bends your hand away from your thumb and toward your palm. The palmaris longus muscle also helps to move your hand toward your palm and helps you to grip objects.

The intrinsic hand muscles act only on your fingers and thumb, and include six groups of muscles. Your four thenar muscles contribute to your ability to grasp objects, allowing you to move your thumb toward and away from your other fingers.

The three hypothenar muscles allow you to move your little finger in a similar manner. The lumbricales are four muscles that help to extend your fingers, but not your thumb, and move them toward your palm.

The four dorsal interossei muscles connect the joints in your fingers to your palm, help to move your fingers away from your thumb and contribute to moving them toward your palm. The three palmar interossei muscles serve the same functions, but move the fingers toward your thumb.

The extrinsic hand muscles originate in your forearm and contribute to the movement of your four fingers. The extensor digitorum allows you to move your finger joints, fingers and your hand at the wrist away from your palm.

The extensor indicis proprius and extensor digit minimi proprius muscles work exclusively on your index finger and small fingers, respectively, in the same manner. The flexor digitorum superficialis and profundis muscles work in the opposite direction, helping to move your fingers, finger joints and bend your hand, at the wrist, toward your palm.

Together, these muscles are essential to your ability to point, raise and lower your fingers, as is required when playing sports such as basketball, volleyball and football. Your thumb is unique from your other fingers because it is primarily controlled by four extrinsic muscles, allowing it a greater range of movement in all directions than your other fingers.

The flexor pollicis longus muscle helps to move your thumb toward your palm. The extensor pollicis longus and brevis muscles both help to straighten and extend your thumb, moving it away from your palm.Practicing hand hygiene is a simple yet effective way to prevent infections. Cleaning your hands can prevent the spread of germs, including those that are resistant to antibiotics and are becoming difficult, if not impossible, to treat. On average, healthcare providers clean their hands less than half of the times they should.

On any given day, about one in 31 hospital patients has at least one healthcare-associated infection. CDC is aware that FDA has issued a proposed rule to address data gaps for certain active ingredients in healthcare antiseptics External external icon.

Randy especially loved all the marked maps. Each city map looks very well-worn now because we carried them everywhere to plan our next move all day long. We are very active and were covering 12-15 miles on foot each day. The maps kept us on course and let us know where to head next.

When we stopped for dinner on the way home from the airport back in LA, I asked Randy what he would change about the trip and his answer was, "Nothing.

Thank you soooooo much for making this trip the celebration I needed. Very organised, amazing place and the tours were fantastic.

All communication from booking to travelling was fantastic and brilliant. Rachael and I had the most fabulous trip. It was so well organized. Everything went according to plan with the exception of the cruiseliner (due to weather) but your colleague worked it out for us in an incredibly expedient and effiicient manner so all worked out well in the end.

We are now home safe and sound and happy to be sharing the pictures and memories of our trip with our friends and family. Thank you so much for your professionalism and organization and frequent correspondence. This was a complicated trip with all the different places we visited and means of transportation. It would have been far too much for me to plan this all on my own. So without you this trip would not have happened.

I look forward to planning a trip with you in the future. I would love to take my husband to Norway, perhaps in the summer this time. Or maybe we will come see you in Iceland. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our trip -- it was excellent. Your company was very responsive and helpful in the planning of our trip. The materials you provided were very good, and the pacing of the trip (driving route and stops) and quality of the accommodations were excellent. The maps, itinerary notes, and cell phone were especially helpful to have, as well as access to the video on driving in Iceland.

Overall, it was a great experience, and would consider coming back in a future year, with additional destinations beyond Iceland.
